Back to the Future

Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd in Back to the Future (1985)

Seeing Back to the Future on the big screen for its 40th anniversary was pure movie magic. I took my 10-year-old daughter, Hayden, who was watching it for the first time, and seeing her reactions reminded me why this film still works after all these years.

She had no idea there were sequels, so when Doc and Marty were scrambling to catch the lightning strike, she was genuinely on edge, whispering, “They need to hurry up.” That scene has always been great, but watching it through her eyes made it feel brand new.

It is easy to forget how much Back to the Future juggles — science fiction, comedy, romance and adventure — and somehow nails every one of them. The soundtrack still rips, the tension still builds and the humor somehow feels even sharper today. Seeing it in a theater again, hearing Alan Silvestri’s score echo through the speakers and noticing the small world details I had never caught before made it feel like a first viewing all over again.

Forty years later, it still has the power of love and the power to remind us why we fell in love with movies in the first place.
