Jurassic World Dominion
Jurassic World Dominion was not as bad as I thought it was going to be, but that in no way makes it great. Everything is more puzzling than anything. Not that it's confusing, but I'm befuddled by the decisions that director Colin Trevorrow and his crew make.
Lightyear
Lightyear is a more straightforward space adventure which will either enamor a child's attention or not. Even though the side characters, and especially Sox, get most of the laughs and the memorable scenes, this movie contains a lot of action set pieces that are interesting, but not enthralling.
The Card Counter
Paul Schrader did it to me again. He has written and directed a film that you think is one thing and is completely different. Yes, The Card Counter is about a professional gambler, but not really.
The Bad Guys
I didn't get anything out of The Bad Guys. I didn't think it was funny. I didn't think it was exciting. I didn't think it was awful. It was just fine.
Fire Island
If somebody is willing to take a chance on a film like Fire Island, they won't only have an entertaining experience, it'll draw them in that much closer to realizing that we are more alike than different.
The Northman
There's a lot to appreciate and there are many memorable moments (in particular a new yard game that I've never seen), but the themes of revenge and legacy didn't resonate with me. I think Eggers is better off presenting puzzles than emulating a Shakespearean tragedy.
Top Gun: Maverick
This movie may actual save the movie theater business. Not so much that it's the greatest movie of all time, but more so because it will remind you of why you enjoy going to the movies so much.
A League of Their Own
This was a movie from my youth and I probably haven't seen it since high school. I thought it completely held up and does an amazing job of telling this story. The cast is superb and I miss the type of films that have large ensembles, but where you can still differentiate between characters easily.
George Carlin’s American Dream
What an important and brave voice George Carlin was. Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio have put together a masterful tribute to Carlin's hilarious and philosophical voice.
Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers
Although I grew up on the Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers cartoon, I can't say that I had an affinity for the characters, despite owning and playing the video game version multiple times on Super NES. If you start this film without having seen any trailers or promotions, I guarantee you that you will not expect what's coming. That can both be a good and bad thing.
Family Camp
My major qualm with Family Camp is that the overarching premise is to show why a family needs to support one another, but it's very much told from a male perspective with the father figure always being the hero.
Ordinary People
I really had to keep in mind the era in which this film was made in. It's not uncommon now to see portrayals of mental health issues and suicide. But for 1980, this topic had to be uncharted territory for the film industry.
Schindler’s List
Simply put, Schindler’s List is one of the most important films that we have today. Especially during these rampant times of conspiracy theories and extreme political rhetoric, this movie is an essential story to the world’s history.
White Men Can’t Jump
I miss the simplicity of films like White Men Can't Jump. It's a very self-contained comedy that immediately throws you into its world and never looks back.
Jackass Forever
Am I too old to find this entertaining? Turns out that I still have a teenager's sense of humor because I found Jackass Forever to be hilarious.
The French Dispatch
Though there is much to admire about The French Dispatch, this was one of the first times that I struggled with the content of the film.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2
My kindergartner said it best, "Daddy, why was the movie full of action and not funny?" Out of the mouth of babes. Maybe she should start writing my reviews.
